Wheelersburg kept its SOC II record perfect Thursday with a four-set victory at Northwest.


Marley Hanzel led the Pirates with 25 kills. Wheelersburg’s contributions included Brooklyn Adams with 14 kills and 12 blocks, 20 digs from Josie Silvey and Hannah Duckworth’s 51 assists. Brooke Miller’s 21 assists, Haleigh Vastine’s 14 kills and Ashley Riley’s 19 digs led the Mohawks.


The win sets up a first place showdown with fellow conference unbeaten Waverly in Tuesday’s match in Pike County. Northwest hosts a tri-match Saturday with Piketon and Notre Dame.

Waverly has set itself up for a Tuesday showdown with Wheelersburg for first place in the SOC II after the Tigers swept host Valley in Thursday’s action.

Bri Wiget led the way for Waverly with 14 kills and 10 digs while Maddy Wiseman’s 37 assists, Kayla Riffe’s 11 digs and Hannah Martin’s five aces were all team highs. The Pirates and Tigers will square off at Waverly as both teams are unbeaten in conference play and are each other’s final opponents before the second round of SOC II matches.

South Webster reached the .500 mark in SOC II play Thursday with a four-set home win over West.

Haley Potters led the Jeeps with nine kills and five digs while Corey Sherman finished with 15 assists and four kills, Maddie Stamper added 10 digs and Marisa Sherrett finished with four aces and three digs.

South Webster entertains Northwest Tuesday to complete the first round of SOC II action.

BOYS SOCCER

Wheelersburg 8, Clay 0

A pair of goals and a pair of assists from Keith Thurmer paced Wheelersburg to an 8-0 home win over Clay.

Zach Russell and Kurt Kaskey each had a goal and an assist in the victory while single scores went to Colin Hanzel, Ethan McCain, Mark Butler and Zack Jordan. Christian Hughes also recorded an assist.

Jordan and Andrew Risner combined for six saves in the shutout. Michael Gleason stopped 16 shots in the loss.

The Pirates travel Tuesday to Minford.

Match at Hidden Cove

Wheelersburg crossed the Ohio River Tuesday and came back with a match victory over East Carter.

The Pirates shot a 164 while the Raiders came in with a 192. Mitchell McFarland’s 38 was the low round of the day.

Wheelersburg migrates to the Elks Country Club Monday and Tuesday for the final SOC II match of the season.
