The Scioto Foundation invites all area students in grades 7-12 and their families to a UCAN (University/College Access Network) Go to College Night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the SOMC Friends Center on Sept. 16. Presented in partnership with Shawnee State University, the program will focus on providing practical information and advice on how to plan, prepare and pay for college.

This year all activities will run concurrently throughout the evening so that participants can come and go at their convenience.

“Room A of the Friends Center will house a number of advising tables where students and parents can learn first-hand about going to college,” said Kim Cutlip, Scioto Foundation Executive Director. “Rooms B and C will offer a traditional college fair featuring representatives from approximately 30 colleges, universities and community colleges, giving attendees the opportunity to gain information on a one-to-one basis.”

Admission to the College Night is free and registration will be taken at the door. Attendees may register for a raffle of eight $250 scholarships for college-bound students and a chance to win helpful books. The winning tickets will be drawn at the end of the evening; students need not be present to win.

Advising tables in Room A will include topics such as advice on college preparation for students in different grades levels from 7-12, preparing for the construction trades, college entrance testing, high school rigor, preparing for college outside the classroom, selecting a major, choosing a college, applying for college, paying for college, finding scholarships, financial aid resources and savings plans, and others.

Colleges and universities sending representatives to participate are Alice Lloyd College, Art Institute of Ohio – Cincinnati, Asbury College, Ashland Community and Technical College, Ashland University, Berea College, Capital University, College of Mount St. Joseph, Daymar College, Ferris State University (Michigan), Hocking College, Kentucky Christian University, Lourdes University, Malone University, Marshall University, Miami University, Morehead State University, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Muskingum University, Ohio Christian University, The Ohio State University, The Ohio State University – ATI, Ohio University, Ohio University – Chillicothe, Ohio University – Southern, Otterbein University, Scioto County Career and Technical Center, Shawnee State University, Southern State Community College, University of Cincinnati and University of Rio Grande.
