A Franklin Furnace woman has been charged with child endangerment after being arrested by Scioto County authorities. Justine Smith, 36, of Gervais Street, is facing one count of child endangerment, a felony of the third degree.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his office received a complaint on July 21, 2013 stating that a two-month-old baby was being treated at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Huntington for possible child abuse.

Donini said his detectives made contact with Scioto County Children’s Services and were able to obtain information to file a report. Detectives alleged they learned that the parents of the two-month-old child had been feeding the child sugar water in her bottle instead of formula for several days. Detectives learned that the baby was taken to Green Squad in Franklin Furnace then transported to Saint Mary’s in Huntington for treatment which resulted in the child being admitted then later released to a foster home through Scioto County Children Services.

Donini referred to the incident as an ongoing investigation that required obtaining medical records and talking to witnesses. He said the case was presented to the Scioto County grand jury for charges which resulted in an indictment warrant being filed and the arrest of the suspect on Monday.

Smith is currently being held without bond pending arraignment through Common Pleas Court.

Donini said other charges were presented to the Scioto County grand jury that could lead to more arrests.

He said anyone with any information concerning the case is being requested to contact detective Jodi Conkel at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office at 740-351-1091 . All calls will remain anonymous.
