The executive director of the Scioto County Community Action Organization says the ball is already rolling in the attempt to bring a new job training program to Scioto County.
Earlier in the week the Daily Times carried a story that Connect Ohio had opened its newest Digital Works location in Logan. Digital Works is a technology skills training program aimed at providing a link between 21st century workforce opportunities and community revitalization. The program provides mentoring and training to workers seeking employment and places them in quality teleworking jobs.
In an e-mail to the Daily Times, Bill Thacker said - “I wanted to let you know that Scioto CAO is working with Connect Ohio and Digital Works to bring the program to Scioto County. Several of my employees of our employment and training division and the IT department met last week in Portsmouth for a training and information session with Digital Works. A follow-up meeting to discuss a partnership with CAO to bring the program here will be scheduled as early as next week.”
Lyndsey Kleven, public relations specialist with Connect Ohio, said the program is providing an avenue for vacant buildings to become job incubators and retain workers in the area. The Digital Works pilot location opened in Zanesville on May 13, with nearly half of the first training group securing employment before the grand opening was held June 21. The Zanesville location has secured employment for more than 75 percent of participants currently enrolled in the Digital Works training program. Additional centers are planned to open in southeastern Ohio this summer with long-term plans for rolling out the program statewide.
“One of the key points their people were making is that there is a definite trend beginning to bring home IT jobs that have been outsourced and they are looking at rural areas as a great source of potential employees,” Thacker said. “We are very excited about this opportunity and will keep you advised as it progresses.”
