Rod Conley, Doug Adkins, Mike Meyers and Conard Newman all recorded wins Saturday night at Portsmouth Raceway Park.
The speeds were fast all evening on PBM Performance Parts, Erson Cams and World Products Night, as drivers from all over the tri-state were on the scene.
The Late Model feature was contested throughout the race. Mike Wilson started on the outside of row one, quickly jumped out to the lead, and led the first 18 laps of the 25-lap event.
Mark Frazier set the Wesbanco fast time and started on the pole. He would ride second most of the race.
The eventual winner, Rod Conley, started fifth and steadily progressed toward the front as the race wore on. The Wheelersburg native and current PRP points leader remained committed to the bottom groove and seemingly had his car setup for the long run. Conley got by Wilson with six laps to go and never looked back en route to claiming his second PRP feature win of the season.
Wilson, Frazier, Josh Bocook and Delmas Conley made up the rest of the top five in the Giovanni’s Pizza Late Model Division. Delmas Conley and Nick Bocook battled side-by-side for the fifth position on the final lap while working around lapped traffic.
Butch Dowdy, of South Shore, Ky., earned the 93.7 fm “The Dawg” Hard Charger Award in his first PRP race of the season.
In the RW Rental & Supply Modifieds, a familiar face returned to victory lane as five-time track champion Doug Adkins took the checkered flag. Todd Robinson led the first couple of laps before going up in flames in an incident that saw his car turn into a fireball.
Flames originating from under the hood shot down each side of the car and underneath it but the Washington Township Fire Department and PRP officials were able to quickly converge on Robinson’s machine and extinguish the blaze. Robinson walked away uninjured.
Robinson’s issues handed the lead over to Adkins and the West Portsmouth racer held on to lead the final 18 laps and win his first PRP A-Main of the season. John Burdette took second. Shawn Holliday, Rick Hensley and Luke Jordan rounded out the top five. Adam Colley was the Markwest Hydrocarbon Hard Charger.
Mike Meyers dominated the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Late Model feature leading all 15 circuits. The win was Meyer’s second of the season. Evyian Terry padded his points lead a bit with a solid second-place finish. Matt Melvin, Robbie Lewis and Todd Galloway made up the remainder of the top five.
In the M & M Inflatables Bomber Division, Frankfort’s Conard Newman was dominant. He started on the pole and led every lap winning for the third time this season and adding to his already large points lead.
Brett Carey, Jason Spillman, Rick Butler and Zach Pendleton completed the top five. Randy Cline was the race’s Hard Charger and recipient of the Bud Newman Memorial Trophy.
Portsmouth Raceway Park will be off this coming weekend but will return to action on Saturday, August 17th for the running of the 19th annual Fred Dillow Memorial. There will be increased payouts in every division, as Late Models, Modifieds, Limited Lates and Bombers will all be on the card.
