A freak accident at a home in Wheelersburg has claimed the life of a child. According to Scioto County Sheriff’s Captain David Hall, five-year-old Isaac Baker was killed when he pulled something on top of himself.

“He was inside the house and pulled a metal wall shelf with a marble mantle, and it fell, striking him in the head,” Hall said. “We got the call about 9:22 a.m.”

The accident occurred on Germany Hollow Road, and the child’s grandmother was babysitting at the house at the time, but had just stepped outside with another child when she heard the crash.

“We have done our investigation, and that is what it appears happened,” Hall said.

Hall said it was an emotional day for not only the child’s family, but members of the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the medical staff at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

“It’s a very sad situation for everybody,” Hall said. “And it was not just with us. At the ER, we saw the doctors and the nurses with our staff. One of our people did CPR until the squad got there. So it was a very emotional day.”
