James Gardner Nolan
James Gardner Nolan, passed away on June 29, 2013, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on Aug.7, 1920, in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was a 1938 graduate of Portsmouth High School. During World War 11 he served in the U.S. Navy on convoy escort duty in the Atlantic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel Gardner Nolan; his brother, Joseph Nolan; nephews, James and Larry Nolan; and son-in-law, Joseph L. Jutz.
In 1946 he entered the sales department of Portsmouth Steel Corporation, which later became the Detroit Steel Corporation. In 1971 he retired as the Louisville District Manager of Sales for Detroit Steel. After that retirement, he immediately formed a sales agency specializing in steel and aluminum wires, as well as wire products, and conducted that business until finally retiring in 1991. Jim was a member of Middletown Christian Church, the Portsmouth Lodge of B.P.O. Elks, Highland Post of the American Legion, and was a Kentucky Colonel.
He felt no one ever experienced a more pleasant, happier life than he. Growing up, his strong and loving parents permitted him the freedom to develop without a lot of restrictions. He spent many delightful hours roaming the banks of the Ohio River, or playing baseball or football on fields located close to his home. As a young boy he kept very busy. He was industrious, delivered newspapers, and was always looking for additional work.
As time passed, he fortunately met, and married, his beautiful girlfriend, Betty. With her loving ways and disposition, they continued to grow up together, and their very happy life continued. The subsequent arrival of a daughter and two grandchildren merely added to that happiness. He was ever thankful for his many blessings.
He is survived by his wonderful, and devoted wife of 72 years, Betty Barkenhus Nolan; a loving daughter, Sherry Lou Jutz; two grandchildren, Eric Nolan Jutz of Louisville, and Lisa Ann Noble (Clell) of Richmond, Ky.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Ky. 40218, with interment in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
