WHEELERSBURG — If Wednesday’s warm weather is any indication of things to come, some people in the community will be very happy when Porter Township Community Pool opens this month. The pool will open at noon on Saturday, May 25, immediately following the Porter Township Memorial Day Parade.
Formerly Tan Lan Pool in Wheelersburg, the Porter Township Trustees assumed control of the pool in 2003. The non-profit pool offers other draws, such as Swim Dance Nights, party rentals, basketball and volleyball courts, and all the money raised through ticket sales goes back into the pool facilities.
The Memorial Day parade in Porter Township begins lining up at Kroger at 10 a.m. on May 25, and steps off at 11 a.m. moving toward Porter Township Community Park and Pool for a brief ceremony at the war memorial. The parade will include VFW Rifle Squad and the grand marshal is Al Parsley. After the parade, the pool will open at noon.
With news that Clay Township Community Pool is permanently closed due to costly repairs, Porter Township and McKinley Pool in Portsmouth are now the only public pools in Scioto County.
Porter Township Community Pool season tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. The season runs through Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. Park shelters at the Porter Township Community Park may be reserved by Porter Township residents. Cost to reserve a shelter is $25 for four hours and must be paid at the time it is reserved.
More information about the pool, and an application for season membership, can be found online at www.portertwp.com.
