The Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District is set to host its Seventh Annual Pharmaceutical Collection Event in cooperation with Southern Ohio Medical Center and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at the Scioto County Jail at 1025 16th Street, Portsmouth.
According to Dan Palmer, Director of the LSSWMD, in 2012, 85 pounds of pharmaceuticals were collected.
“He said this program is being offered to Scioto County residents free of charge to allow them the opportunity to properly dispose of unused, unwanted and expired drugs.
Palmer said, the age-old advice of flushing pharmaceuticals down the toilet is now considered to be the least desirable of all alternatives.
According to released information about the event, a recent study conducted by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission detected low concentrations of dozens of chemicals and pharmaceuticals in the Ohio River upstream and downstream from Louisville, Ky. Among the substances found were antidepressants, veterinary hormones and cocaine.
Pharmaceuticals being collected during the event include prescription and over the counter medications. No liquid medications will be accepted.
Other items accepted include intra-venous solutions, injectable and sharps. Controlled substances will be accepted.
According to event materials, controlled substances are defined as any drug or chemical that is regulated by the federal government and can be obtained legally only with a valid prescription.
Substances such as marijuana or methamphetamines will not be accepted.
Law enforcement will be available during the event for security and medical professionals will be on hand for prescription identification.
According to Palmer, all of the drugs collected during the event will be incinerated.
