The Scioto Foundation deadline for 2013 scholarship applications from students throughout Scioto County and southern Ohio is 5 p.m., April 3. Approximately $310,000 in scholarships will be awarded through the Scioto Foundation in 2013.
Scioto Foundation scholarship application forms for 2013 are now available at the SF office, located at 303 Chillicothe Street in Portsmouth, or online at www.sciotofoundation.org. All completed applications must be delivered to the SF office or mailed to the Foundation office at P.O. Box 911, 303 Chillicothe Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662 before 5 p.m. on April 3.
When selecting scholarship awards, the SF Scholarship Committee considers several factors including financial need, academic achievement and leadership potential, as well as school and community involvement. Students wishing to renew previous scholarships must reapply each year through the specified application process.
SF scholarship application guidelines require students to turn in six copies of the complete application, a current transcript of college grades and/or high school grades, one letter of reference from the applicant’s school faculty, one letter of reference from a member of the community, one high school graduation photo or recent photo and a paragraph biography.
The SF Scholarship Committee, chaired by Phyllis Fried, selects approximately half of the recipients of awards given through the scholarship funds currently managed by the Scioto Foundation. Other scholarship winners are chosen by external committees established by fund donors.
As part of its UCAN (University/College Access Network) program, the Scioto Foundation has established a scholarship locator designed to serve as a one-stop locator for high school students, parents and guidance counselors to search for scholarship opportunities locally, statewide and nationally. The easily-navigated centralized database is available online at www.ucanfindascholarship.org. Area students are encouraged to explore the SF scholarship locator to find a variety of scholarships which match their educational goals and interests.
In tune with UCAN goals more scholarships are becoming available each year for area youth. Like the Foundation’s long-established scholarship program which has overseen scholarship distributions annually since 1974, the UCAN plan is dedicated to providing financial
assistance so that one day every Scioto County student can attend the college of his or her
