Jake Lankheit and Jordan Williams have been announced as the Mid-South Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week by conference officials. Both players are first-time recipients of the weekly honor. The award, which runs from Monday through Sunday, spanned the five games including Miami-Hamilton, Ohio-Chillicothe and Bluefield series.
Jake Lankheit, a freshman, earned the weekly honor after batting .391 and slugging .652 over those five games. He recorded a hit in four of the five games and finished with nine hits for the week in 23 at-bats. He also drove in 11 runs and had four extra-base hits (two doubles, two triples) to go along with five runs scored.
His two biggest games came during Shawnee State’s most convincing victories of the week. In the 23-3 victory over Ohio-Chillicothe, Lankheit went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and two triples. During that game, he also drove in six runs and scored three more. In the Saturday game vs. Bluefield, he helped the Bears open the conference slate in style with a 4-for-5 game that included a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Lankheit has played in 17 games this season and made 11 starts. He is currently batting .348 through 21 games and has 15 RBI to go along with six runs scored. He is slugging .478 and has a .375 on-base percentage. Behind the plate, he has also thrown out three runners trying to steal this season.
Senior Jordan Williams brought home his first weekly honor after he appeared in four of the team’s five games this week with all of his appearances coming in relief. In total, he pitched seven innings and allowed just two earned runs on nine hits during that time. He also struck out nine hitters in those innings. The senior picked up two saves and another victory during that time.
Williams picked up his first save of the week as he pitched a perfect final inning against Miami-Hamilton during the 5-2 win. Williams also pitched each of the three games during the Bluefield series. The only time he allowed earned runs during the week was during the 12-7 win on Saturday when he pitched an inning of relief. In the first game on Sunday, Williams pitched 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the save in the 5-3 victory. He came back in the second game to throw 2.1 innings and picked up the win in the extra-inning game that the Bears won 8-5.
For the season, Williams has worked in relief during 10 games. He has posted a 2.11 ERA with the three saves and one victory in 21.1 innings of work. He has struck out 21 batters and allowed just 16 hits, including only three extra-base hits. Opponents are hitting just .205 off of him.
Baseball will be back in action this weekend with five more games from Thursday through Saturday. The Bears host Concordia this Thursday at 1 p.m. in doubleheader. This weekend, SSU will host Cumberland University for a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
