Second Presbyterian Church, located at 801 Waller Street will present “A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.

The sanctuary of Second Presbyterian Church will be decorated for the Christmas season and open to receive the community for the festive, annual event that has been presented since 1992.

Dr. Stanley Workman, Jr., who serves as the director of music for the event, said it usually attracts at least 400 people and forecasts a similar response for this year.

“It is a traditional service based out of England and its a service in which there are nine scripture lessons that are read, and in between those scripture lessons there are carols or choir anthems that are sung in between each of the readings,” Workman said.

The carols will be accompanied by a full orchestra.

Workman said he believes the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is important to residents in the community.

“I have had people to tell me that this event really sets the tone for them for them in terms of the Christmas spirit,” Workman said.

Workman said many people become consumed by the commercialism and shopping aspects of Christmas.

“It is a great opportunity to sit and meditate and focus on the scripture lessons, and hear the beautiful music of the holiday season,” Workman said. “I have had many people to tell me that this is the highlight of the Christmas season and that it really puts them in the Christmas spirit.”

According to Workman, the carol arrangements will be performed by three composers, John Rutter, Mack Wilberg and David Wilcocks.

The choir is primarily made up of Second Presbyterian members, but will include a host of friends from other churches.

“Two thirds of the choir is Second Presbyterian choir, but then another part are friends who join us for this special occasion,” Workman said.

The event is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be taken up which go towards the sponsorship of other musical programs as well as continuing the festival events. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.
