A man arrested with heroin, a handgun, cash and electronic equipment, has been convicted and sentenced to prison.
Judge Howard H. Harcha, III, sentenced Sly D. Hollins, 21, of Dayton, who had been scheduled for a jury trial Monday morning, to 10 years in prison. According to Scioto County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Kuhn, on Friday Hollins entered a guilty plea to two counts of trafficking in heroin, resulting in the sentencing.
Kuhn said officers of the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force initiated an investigation and began surveillance of Hollins and others in mid-summer. Hollins was arrested on July 6, 2012 at he traveled to make a delivery of heroin to an address in Portsmouth. Kuhn said Hollins, and his accomplice, Ralph Jones, of Portsmouth, left Dayton with the shipment of drugs on July 5, and stayed at a motel in Wheelersburg that night. The officers followed Hollins and Jones the next morning as they drove to Portsmouth to deliver a portion of the heroin.
The two were stopped in Portsmouth and searched. Kuhn said over 30 grams of heroin and a .44 caliber handgun were found in the vehicle. Officers then sought and received a search warrant for the motel room where officers said they found another 21 grams of heroin, $1,556 in cash, and a quantity of electronic equipment. All items were forfeited to the state.
According to Kuhn, Dayton has been the source of the burgeoning heroin traffic in Scioto County.
"Since the closing of the pill mills, heroin has largely replaced Oxycodone as the primary drug of abuse in the county," Kuhn said. "Much of the heroin is brought by dealers from Dayton."
Jones has also been indicted for his role in the heroin trafficking and is facing charges in the Court of Common Pleas.
In April, two Scioto County residents and four people from the Dayton area were arrested on drug charges. Among those charges were trafficking in heroin and possession of heroin.
