Music, dancing and acting will be the major course of study for some students beginning in the Fall of 2013 who want to attain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theater.

Shawnee State University has been approved to add musical theater as a major course of study. It is the only university in the Tri-State region to offer the program.

The region has many creative students who would leave the area to pursue the musical theater degree or if they stayed in the area, they would settle on a different major.

“Several universities have either a musical degree or a theater degree but not a combined musical theater degree,” John Huston, director of SSU’s Theater Department said. “It is really good for us to get it through the state and it will make a huge difference in what we do here. We lose a lot of students because we haven’t offered it before. We received several calls from northern Ohio about the program already and we haven’t even announced it yet.”

The program will be heavily dependent on performance. Every semester will include acting classes or a musical theater performance class plus dancing and music. Auditions for the program will be in March, April and May of 2013. Students must audition for the program.

“If a student doesn’t have a lot of experience but shows promise, we may still accept them,” Huston said.
