PIKETON — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is making plans for its third annual Science Alliance, a science fair scheduled for Sept. 25-26, 2012.

The event is expected to include about 1,000 high school juniors and educators from the region, and includes scientific demonstrations related to science, technology, engineering and math and also provides information related to careers associated with those fields. The students also receive a driving tour around the perimeter of the facility and information related to the plant’s historical and future operations.

Dr. Vincent Adams, the Portsmouth Site Director, said educating students about the facility and providing them information that can assist them in their future pursuits is part of the department’s effort to engage the community.

“The U.S. Department of Energy takes this event seriously because we know it can have an impact on the students who participate. The government promotes student engagement in the careers of science, technology, engineering and math, and this is part of our site’s contribution to that nationwide effort,” Dr. Adams said. “We look forward to welcoming the many schools that will participate and making this event a productive educational experience.”

Representatives from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and regional universities will join DOE prime contractors (Fluor-B&W Portsmouth, Restoration Services, Inc., Wastren-EnergX Mission Support, United States Enrichment Corporation, B&W Conversion Services) in operating the demonstration areas. Those activities include groundwater monitoring, understanding the nuclear fuel cycle, recycling, and many others.

“We believe the Science Alliance is a tremendous opportunity for our region’s young people,” Dr. Adams said. “We are very proud of the growth of this event. We would like to thank area educators for making that possible.”
