Anyone who has ever served in the National Guard is being invited to the fifth annual reunion of the 216th Engineer Battalion, Saturday, Sept. 15 at American Legion Post 23, located at Seventh and Court streets across from the Scioto County Courthouse in Portsmouth.
One of the organizers, First Sergeant Claude Duckworth said the event will kick off at noon and there is no charge.
“All they have to do is show up and register. What we try to do is get them to donate a little money for the next year. If they want to donate - fine. If they don’t want to donate - fine,” Duckworth said.
Duckworth said people come from all across the tri-state for the event.
“I have had two or three from back in the fifties when we were the 166th Infantry show up,” Duckworth said. “They’re like me, they’re almost 80.”
Duckworth said hot dogs cooked by Sergeant First Class Mike Blackburn and baked beans cooked by Sergeant Kelley Emmons will be served, with soft drinks provided by Pepsi Cola and Coca Cola. Door prizes will also be given away.
“The National Guard recruiters are going to furnish some things, and Desco Federal Credit Union is sponsoring it along with the 40 et 8 at the Legion,” Duckworth said.
Duckworth said those attending are invited to bring their extra pictures that they took at the 2011 picnic for the record book the group has started.
Anyone wanting more information can call Duckworth at 740-456-5645; Sergeant First Class Ed Roberts at 740-259-5158; Staff Sergeant Warnie Evans at 740-820-3692; Staff Sergeant Greg Thompson at 606-932-2273 or Sergeant First Class Mike Blackburn at 740-357-5473.
