PDT Staff Report

The sixth annual Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund Tennis Tournament will be Sept. 8-9, at the Steven A. Hunter Tennis Center at the Portsmouth High School Clark Athletic Complex, and the William Daehler Tennis Center at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth.

Participants should meet at the Steven A. Hunter Tennis Center courts for the pre-tournament meeting beginning at 8 a.m.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Steven A Hunter Hope Fund, Inc. The Hope Fund was established in memory of Steven Hunter and supports students at the Portsmouth City Schools who are financially disadvantaged by providing clothing, shoes, field trip/excursion fees, dental and vision exams, scholarship assistance, and many other goods and services through the endowment fund at the Scioto Foundation.

The Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund, Inc., provides fund raising activities and provides additional services directly including Steven’s Power Pack Program. Steven’s Power Pack provides food on the weekends for hungry children in Portsmouth, East Portsmouth, New Boston, and Northwest Elementary Schools — and soon West Elementary School.

Almost one in three children in Scioto County are considered as “food insecure” and the tennis tournament is one of the primary funding sources for Steven’s Power Pack Club in these schools.

The tournament will feature a round robin format with Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Trophies will be awarded the champions in different age and flight categories. All participants will receive a tee shirt. Last year’s tournament saw more than 50 participants.

The entry fee is $25 per person. Early registration is encouraged with the deadline being Sept. 5. Entry forms can be found at www.stevenshopefund.org, under the Tennis Tournament tab. Entry forms can also be found at The Portsmouth Tennis Academy, 1315 Kendall Ave., Portsmouth, or at Hunter-Williams Insurance at 837 Sixth St., Portsmouth. Special arrangements available for students who cannot afford to pay the entry fee, but all participants must preregister by the entry deadline.
