Locals compete in Soap Box Derby

The 75th All-American Soap Box Derby was held Saturday, July 21 in Akron.

Local competitors in the race were, Cassidy Book in the super stock division and Isabel Cassidy in the stock division.

Both Cassidy and Book won their divisions at the Scioto County Soap Box Derby June 9th, hosted by the Portsmouth Civic Forum.

Book, the 13-year-old daughter of Todd and Emily Book of McDermott, was among 117 competitors in the super stock division.

Book’s car was in honor of the area’s NFL football team the Portsmouth Spartans.

Racers is this division came from 40 states and four counties (Japan, Canada, New Zealand and Germany).

According to submitted information, Book defeated racers from Green Bay, Wis.; Newport, Vt.; Beaumont, Texas; Tullahoma, Tenn. and Indianapolis, Ind.

At the end of the day Book finished 6th overall in her division. She posted one of the fastest times of the day when she finished the course in just 29.44 seconds.

At the 2011 All-American Soap Box Derby race Book, finished sixth in the stock division.

Cassidy, the nine-year-old daughter of Dan and Amy Cassidy of West Portsmouth, defeated racers from Omaha, Neb. and Lynchburg, Va. in the stock division.

The All American Soap Box Derby celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2012.
