The Portsmouth Pantry Garden AmeriCorps Summer Associate VISTAs (Volunteers In Service To America) will be hosting the first of two workshops tonight.
The topic of the workshop is “Nutrition On A Budget,” and will be held at All Saints Church, located at 610 Fourth St., Portsmouth, from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight.
“During the workshop we will be talking about nutrition on a budget, we will have free food samples and we will be making some nutritional food. Other topics include how to shop healthy, what you should buy and how to do it inexpensively,” said Saira Haider, a Portsmouth Pantry Garden AmeriCorps Summer Associate VISTA.
According to Nikki Karabinis, coordinator for the Center for Community Service at SSU, the AmeriCorps Summer Associate VISTAs are seven paid employees whom will maintain the four-acre garden, recruit and manage volunteers, raise funds and distribute their freshly harvested food and vegetables to local food pantries.
A second workshop has been scheduled for July 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at All Saints Church to discuss home gardening. Topics for the workshop will include window gardening, herb gardening and gardening space that could be created on the porch among others.
“Anyone who is interested in learning about nutrition or gardening should come to the workshops. If anyone wants to eat healthier or do not understand how to do it or how its done, should come to the workshops,” Haider said.
This year’s Portsmouth Pantry Garden was expanded to four acres in the Sciotoville area.
According to Karabinis, more than 2,300 pounds of fruits and vegetables were harvested from the garden in 2011.
