The Waverly High School Music Department will be presenting “The Sound of Music” on March 15, 16 and 17. Tickets for the performance will be $8 for adults and $6 for students. The evening performances will begin at 7 p.m in the Waverly High School Auditorium. This is the last musical that Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote as a team and is probably their most well-loved. It has been translated into several world languages, and is based on a true story of the Family Von Trapp.
The musical involves a young lady, Maria, who wants to become a nun. She seems to get into trouble during her days at the abbey, and Mother Superior, played by Partricia McCambridge, is told by Sisters Berthe, Sophia and Margaretta, played by Felicia Jennings, Ashley Horne and Cheyenne Sears, just how much trouble she is into. Mother Superior advises Maria to take a job as a governess for Captain Von Trapp, played by Alex Yocum, and his seven children.
Maria, played by Caitlyn Miller, follows a long line of governesses that have just not been able to handle the children, or the captain. She arrives to a house run like a battleship. The children want to love their father but since the death of their wife has shut them and music out of his life. He is involved with the Baroness Elsa Von Schraeder, played by Holly Miller, and gets advice from a best friend, Max Dettweiler, played by Austin New. Elsa wants the prestige that would come from marrying Captain Von Trapp, while Max sees money with the union of two very wealthy and high-society people. Max is always looking for some way to make some kind of money.
As the story unfolds, the captain realizes that he has been shutting his children out, realizes it is Maria who has melted his harsh exterior, and begins to fall in love with her. The baroness realizes this, and leaves. With the German occupation of Austria, more pressure is put on the captain to join the Navy of the Third Reich. He absolutely refuses, and realizes that after he and Maria are married, they must leave all they have in Austria and escape into Switzerland to freedom.
The seven Von Trapp children are played by Hillary Kittaka (Leisl), Drew Herman (Friedrich), Angelique Tanner (Louisa), Kayla Miller (Brigitta), Isabel Sheridan-Runyon (Marta) , Drew Seddelmeyer (Kurt) and Kaylea Shiland (Gretl). Rolf, Liesl’s German boyfriend, is played by Ben Evory. The musical is directed by Mrs. Brenda Harper, Mr. Bart Frost is stage manager, and Dr. Lisa Frost is costume manager. Many parents and grandparents are helping with sewing costumes, finding props, ad and ticket sales, etc. Come and enjoy an evening filled with The Sound of Music.
